I received a letter,
from a refugee in Senegal who wants help to claim a large amount of money belonging to her father. Then, a letter told me that the problem
had been solved. Having provided help (I HAD NOT!),
I would receive a six-figure present! I must send 350 euro for courier
services. My reply:
‘I explained to Miss Mariama,
that I would not be sending money. There is no need whatsoever. I suggest that you pay the amount
into my debit card account (which I will give you, if you agree) at any bank. The bank will levy charges and
transfer the money to me immediately through Visa. The bank will know how to convert
the Visa card into funds on my account.
Banks do this millions of times
each day. (I have been to Senegal several times
and found the banks extremely professional in every respect.) I appreciate that this may be a little
inconvenient to you, but that is the most efficient method of bank transfer and leaves neither of us at any risk.’ Since then, silence.
Using couriers to make you pay them
is a standard trick. Avoid them by bank transfers. Any request for money: reply that they
should take it from the money held by you. Do NOT send money. If you decide to provide a bank
account, provide an empty account so that your main account cannot be emptied by others. Such offers of money for nothing will
result in: 1. You receiving No money at all.
2. You losing any money you send. 3. Money being taken from any bank account that you identify. Keep your money!
