Starting an IM business
needs time and money.
There are two main levels:
hobby and professional.
The hobby level is where most of us
start. This in an exploration
with a limited budget.
Our set up is limited, possibly a
done-for-you service
(see Devon Brown below).
Either we start with a
‘$100 a day, no site, no list’
system, or we have a site and
gradually build it up.
If we find that we have sufficient time
for IM, we decide which market
(physical or non-physical goods)
and niche (making money online,
dog training, self-improvement)
are best for us.
The time factor is key. If we are not
prepared to donate sufficient time
to build our business, further cash
investment should not be made.
The hobby stage will see little, or
no, cash generated, certainly not
enough to quit the day job.
You may wish to keep it as a hobby
because you enjoy it. You may wish
to do so to make a start, when you
cannot allocate enough time to
build the business.
Most IM folk do not progess from
here. If they want to move forward,
they need to scale up.
If they stay at the hobby level, they
can spend a lot on the
‘offers of the week’. This is
known as ‘shiny object syndrome’.
Each new product offers a life
of luxury for almost no work.
The hobbyist has little knowledge
to evaluate each ‘miracle’ offer.
Many will not be suitable, or
need knowledge and commitment
that our hobbyist lacks.
The hobbyist generally drifts,
without a map, through the
IM world. Exploring often
causes many changes of
direction in finding the way
forward.
