Protecting your site is critcal,
as we have discussed.
But what about your computer?
Two days ago,
I switched on my
(other) computer.
Windows did not open and
just flashes at me.
Timur, my saviour and
technical wizard, has
managed to save most
(possibly, all) of my data,
and the computer is
working.
There has been a
‘hard disk’ warning,
which he said to ignore,
but keep backing up
all documents.
So, what I have learned:
Have a large separate disk
ready (mine is 2TB) to empty
your computer,
though using it
to back up before the crash
is better.
Vacuum your desk top
every 6 months to avoid
problems.
Have a separate copy of
your calendar, so that if
your computer does not open,
you appointments will
continue.
Use your email system
as a quick back up for
key documents, subject
to memory constraints.
If you are completing
something late in the day
and do not have time
for a complete back up,
email yourself, or save it
to draft email.
I remember colleagues
working all day and most
of the night on documents.
They went home leaving
them on the office central
drive. They came in next
morning to find theri work
lost some due to fault.
If the computer needs
rebooting, many of your
addresses, which you
automatically use on
your browser, will be lost,
so list them on an email,
or other safe place.
Disconnect other disks
from your computer
when loading. They
slow down your
switching on process.
The tidier your files,
the quicker it will be
backed up and less files
will be lost.
Being untidy with files,
this is a lesson for me.
Back up your computer
