Internet Marketing – What is a Sales Funnel? -3

A decade ago, most IM vendors
were selling individual products,
then returning to buyers
with new offers, using
separate emails.
Finding potential buyers is
expensive in money,
time or both. They need to
‘know, like, and trust’ you before
they are prepared to buy.
Starting selling with a $10 book,
for example, identifies a need to
be able to sell higher-priced
products to make better profits.
For a funnel to work, it needs a
suitable range of products,
offered in a logical, attractive
The first step is to exchange a
product for the email address
of the prospect.
This is called a ‘lead magnet’. It is
normally free, but must be valuable
to the prospect.
The prospect writes his/her email
address. The name is optional.
Every step that you want the
prospects to do increases the
number of them that will leave
your page.
Omar Martin (see below) says
just collect the email address.
I ask for the name as I want to be
able to write to a person, not to
an address.
Even though the lead magnet is
free, it should be of top quality to
attract prospects.
The prospects
have an internet full of free
products. Unless they consider
yours to be valuable, you will
lose them.
Giving you their email address
is called a ‘single opt-in’. If you
then email the prospect to
confirm, this is a double opt-in.
A double opt-in is favoured by
autoresponder firms, such as Aweber.
This is to reduce spam, However, as
Omar says, it also reduces your list,
as some may not receive the
confirmation letter and others may
not reply, even if they intend to.
